TALK 1          THE WHEELS OFF THE BUS

LONDON  TO  KATHMANDU

Eighteen people from England, Australia and New Zealand travelling in an orange and white double decker bus that started its days in Kilmarnock and should have been retired rather than embarking on a dangerous overland trip.

Cooking, sleeping and travelling on this very unreliable bus called Flaps led to three months of trials, tribulations and thrills on a very exciting road.

We travelled from England to France where we met our scruffy mobile home.

Flaps creaked through Monaco, Italy, Yugoslavia (our trip was before war divided the country), Greece, Turkey, Syria. and Jordan.  We abandonned Flaps to visit Israel before continuing our bus journey back though Jordan, Syria and Turkey to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and finally arrived very late in Nepal.

The roads varied from reasonable to unpassable and took us through heat waves, sand storms and spectacular beauty.

We were shot at in wars, avoided tribal disputes and paid not to be shot during curfews.

Different people, cultures, religions, music, food, languages, vegetation and unimaginable toilets!

So many different exciting experiences in so many different exciting places.
